Powerful Coaching Questions
The WHAT Question
The “What” question becomes incredibly powerful when it forces the client to think about something in a new way, rather than tell you something they already know. What questions after open and look to the future.
Notice the difference in the responses to these two questions:
Question: Did you think it was important?
Response: Yes, somewhat.
Question: What was important to you about that?
Response: It reminded me of what happened last time something similar happened in my classroom. When I thought about it, I realised exactly what I need to do now.
Even Better If WHAT Questions
Instead of “Tell me more” or “say more about that” use “What else can you say about that?”
Instead of “Would you like A or B?” use “What impact does x have?”
Instead of “What is better for you, to do A or B?” use “What would be the best thing to do right now?”
This Months Coaching Resource
Using SWOT Analysis to support deep reflection.
Deep reflection on the year is only an effective way to close off professional growth cycles, but it is also a great way to locate and identify changes for the future.
SWOT analysis focuses on Strengths, Weaknesses, Challenges and Threats; and helps you to identify what to keep doing, stop doing, start doing and do differently. It is a simple and effective reflective tool that is highly effective when used to support a coaching conversation.
Strengths
What were the successes?
What aspects of the curriculum do learners find easy?
What elements contributed to the success?
How might you take what you have learnt and leverage it next year?
Weaknesses
What aspects of the classroom stopped or limited learning?
Where were the gaps in learning?
What contributed to the challenges?
How might you change things to address those weaknesses next year?
Opportunities
What are the opportunities for next year?
What might you do differently?
How might you set learning up for success next year?
What are the key aspects to keep, change, do more of, and do less of in the future?
How might you leverage what you have learned from this year?
What is possible?
Threats
What are the barriers?
What are the limitations?
How might you overcome these barriers of limitations?
What is stopping you?
What do you need to do less next year?
What do you need to change?

Finding Focus and Owning Your Attention
with Dr. Amishi Jha
I want you to pay attention and direct your flashlight right on this podcast—you’ll understand what that means after you listen to this episode. I’m talking to Dr. Amishi Jha, a neuroscientist and the author of the best-seller Peak Mind, about attention, focus, concentration, and mindfulness—specifically how mindfulness can literally change our levels of attention. This incredible conversation was a game changer for me.
An Idea Unpacked
What we miss when we don’t pay enough attention…
There is an 11 % chance that a person's first words on a topic are what they think, feel or believe. When we listen into the energy and pattern of what is said, we become privileged to gain a peek into the underlying engine room of thoughts, feelings and beliefs. Give full attention in a conversation. You will experience an unseen and often unheard conversation, like seeing into the infrared or ultraviolet spectrum of conversation—the energetic vibration of the very atoms that formulate what's being communicated.

Why do we spend most of our time listening to fix?
When I reflect on the kinds of problems people bring to coaching conversations, they are often centred around the actions of another person. It is not uncommon to centre our challenges and issues around the actions of others. For example, it takes high levels of self-awareness for a person to pause and reflect on their contribution to the circumstances.
Interestingly, when we hear someone expressing frustration or difficulty with another person, we tend to offer advice.
It turns out—based on scientific research—that we literally only hear what we listen for. We pay special attention to what we expect to see, hear, feel, or taste

Leadership is listening.
It’s said that, on a typical business day, we spend 45% of our time listening, 30% talking, 16% reading and 9% writing. Amongst all this, the action that has the most impact on others is listening.
Imagine if you could amplify the impact you have in that fraction of time. Concerning strengthening the impact of leaders, imagine if we could also get the 30% - the talking fraction - right. That's an increased impact on a day's actions that make up 75% of your efforts as a leader.
Speaking + listening = 75%

Things that stop us from being present in a conversation
Have you ever been stuck ruminating on the same thoughts? Often caused by experiencing something that makes you feel shame, shocked, sad, frustrated, angry, worried, or annoyed? The emotions and corresponding thoughts just won't go away. You feel stuck churning over the same thoughts and emotions that hold your attention and you can't unhook yourself - even when you need to reset and refocus your attention elsewhere.
Your nervous system is telling you something, and you need to create some space in which to listen. The sympathetic nervous system and limbic system are activated, and you're in the action zone. You need to do something about it.
